Why Teach?

Donna ProfileThe emotional rewards of a career with Lazy Daisy

Donna wrote to us on 16th August 2012 to say

'You may recall that I posted about my first due lady with an induction. Well here is her (and my first) birth story....

"Hey Donna,  Here she is.... Ivy Belle Clayton born on 1st August at 5:20pm.  After being induced twice she came in a bit of a hurry (even the midwives wouldn't believe I was in labour and then when they finally examined me they felt her head!!). I was only in the delivery room for 2 hours ......I was relaxed and in control!! My Mum was fantastic at keeping me relaxed and telling me to blow the waves away. I managed on just gas and air.  Thanks so much for all your help. I will continue to recommend your classes to anyone who is pregnant as it wouldn't have been the same if I was not so calm and relaxed, Jo"

This email made me SO proud to be a Daisy Birth Educator (I must admit I shed a little emotional tear!) and is the exact reason why I chose to join Daisy. How rewarding it feels to have made a difference to somebody's life at such an important time! I wanted to say thank you to you both for all your hard work with not only launching the classes in the first place at the very beginning (Julie) but also the support, help and direction that you give to us all (both of you!).

I've just started my second term and my Bicester class is maxed out at 13 - I can't quite believe it.  I'm in Sure Start centres in both of my towns and the Supervisor of Midwives in Milton Keynes rang me this week to ask if she could recommend my classes - I am over the moon!   Not only am I reaching mums who really need us via Sure Start funding but I am also helping so many mums to change their view of childbirth, which is so important to me.  Long live Daisy Birthing!"

The head of Leeds community midwifery was there and was very impressed with the Daisy Birthing teachings! I've posted a photo on the facebook page. If you'd like to hear more about it let me know. I feel so honoured to have been there, and it's all thanks to Lazy Daisy, Amanda x"

Why train to become an antenatal or Baby teacher with Lazy Daisy - Is this the right career choice for you?

Daisy is one of the only 'peer to peer' birth and baby supporter franchises and parenting programmes we know of in the UK.  Formed by a mummy (and coming out of her own experiences of PND and PTSD, oh and five births of her own) for mummies .... both mummies in need of classes and mummies in need of a family friendly working option!

Daisy is about

  • Empowerment
  • Choice
  • Natural techniques
  • Wellbeing

Class of Feb 2012

Applicants can choose to join the Daisy birth and parenting network at three levels:-

Daisy Birth Mentor

To become a Daisy Birthing ® birth mentor and antenatal teacher, you should be passionate about birth and babies, feel every woman deserves a great birth experience (however their birth plays out on the day) and really want to inspire and motivate others.

As a pregnancy class teacher or as we say a Daisy Birthing birth mentor, providing peer to peer support, you will work with mums-to-be weekly using movement, relaxation and education to really help them feel physically and emotionally birth ready!

Our Daisy Birthing antenatal teacher training course is open to those who have a passion for active birth (perhaps having used movement during their own pregnancy and labour), who teach movement classes already and/or who are working with mums to be in the capacity of doula, midwife or pregnancy therapist.

This antenatal programme have been carefully devised, researched and authored (over a period of 8 years) gaining full FEDANT approved  in the Summer of 2009, and supported by a beautiful suite of unique relaxation tracks (composed and professionally mastered exclusively for Lazy Daisy) and scripts.

Mentors train over a period of 6-12 months and through a combination of practical study days with our HQ team (comprising hypnotherapists, pregnancy yoga teachers and midwives), virtual e-learning, video study, real life observations and class case studies.

On completion of the training, Daisy Birth Mentors run a full birthing franchise offering both weekly 'mum only' pregnancy movement, education and relaxation classes and also intensive workshops for birth (aimed at mum attending with her birth partner).

Not only will you learn about movement, anatomy and massage but you will also study breathing, relaxation, self hypnosis and how sensory environment (and even factors like colour and sound therapy - advanced mentor status) can aid a positive pregnancy exerience and a positive birht experience.

Daisy Baby Mentor

Daisy Baby, our continuity of care module for the twelve months post birth, is open to all parents who want to embrace and celebrate the parent baby attachment through baby massage and baby yoga.

Our baby mentors study full infant massage (our course is approved by www.iptiuk.com as a recognised infant massage qualification) and soft stretch/baby yoga but more importantly learn how to package this in a way which is 'age and developmentally' appropriate for baby (and for mummy).  For example, our tinies teachers (the module especially for the forth trimester) learn how to use the body work in short segments inter mingling with in arms exercises, soothing, calming, white noise and a range of sensory tools designed to appeal to baby in the first 12 weeks of life.

Because classes are very much about the parent and baby relationship, Daisy Baby mentors will also learn breathing and relaxation exercises and early movement for the postnatal mummy, to help her feel better, stronger and more ready in herself!

All Daisy Baby mentors study over 4 days of practical training and a programme of e-learning and case study assessment.    Once study is completed they can lead the full franchise programme of both Tinies (approx 6 weeks to 4 months) and Wrigglers (approx 4 months to mobile) baby massage and baby yoga classes;  plus also offer mummy relaxation and movement too.

All teachers study primitive reflexes, systems such as vestibular and proprioception, learn key reflexology techniques, understand principals such as swaddling and calming reflex and look at the cues and behaviour of each baby stage.

Daisy Parent supporter

Daisy Parent Supporters are more often or not qualified in one of our other parenting mentor modules (birth or baby) but it is possible to join us and offer this module alone.

Daisy Parent peer supporters really are there to reassure the new parent.  The Daisy New Born workshop is quite unique in it's approach - looking at parenting tools from an holistic angle and making massage and calming practical and useable for every new parent (regardless of parenting style).  New Born supporters help parents understand and interpret visual, auditory and physical cues in baby;  take away confusion over genuine cues and primitive reflexes;  help parents to understand and work to resolve what we call 'moro sorrow' and really help set expectations of the new born baby.  Parents are guided through our top 7 magic holds and learn how to adapt these for reflux and other conditions;  through magic winding postures and education on colic and reflux;  learn a night time routine and dry bath inclusive of early reflexology for baby .  In addition we consider sleep - how much, how little, how often and factors which might disturb a baby in REM sleep.

Along side this holsitic session, Daisy Parent Supporters also train with our Paediatric team to offer Daisy Baby Safe - a course all about household safety and baby safety awareness in those first few months.  Topics such as safe sterilistation are covered;  current guidance on safer sleep; household dangers and how to deal with issues such as falls, nose bleeds, burns;  understanding signs of illness and acting on instinct;  and even CPR and chocking.

This franchise pack includes the Baby Anne resus dolly.
